How Soccer Explains the World: An Unlikely Theory of Globalization. By Franklin Foer. A great book, even if you're not a soccer fan. But if you are, you gotta pick it up. Foer uses soccer almost as a metaphor for a country and/or region's culture -- the viciousness of Red Star Belgrade; the purity of FC Barcelona; the wierd tolerance of Tottenham and Ajax; and the sad state of Brazilian soccer. I read the whole thing in a weekend.
Ginga. God, a great documentary about Brazilian kids who aspire to play professional soccer. It makes your heart bleed. Go see it (it plays every once in a while on Fox Soccer Channel).
