The
Homeless World Cup is being held from September 24-30 in Cape Town, South Africa (South Africa won the opening game against Chile, 2-1). I had not heard about this until today, but I wish I had: the organization uses street soccer as a way to improve the lives of the excluded, homeless and/or poverty-stricken players. This year 48 countries -- from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe -- are participating (the photo is of the Cameroon team warm-up). Pretty damn cool, and a nice reminder of the power of sport in general and football in particular.
